I told the cat to look thoughtful. This was the best she could do.

A Daily Shoot photo. Today's subject: Make a photograph of something metallic today. Put the emphasis on texture and light.
I shot these spoons in our utensil drawer. No lights and lit with a flash on camera (not OCF, though).

It's Bella and it's just after her morning jaunt outside. Apparently she was whipped. I liked her on the kitchen floor, as she usually opts for carpet. Must've been the nice ol' sunbeam tempting her.

I'm trying to use my histogram more. I used to think that as long as the readout didn't touch either side of the LCD, the picture was fine. After reading and studying some recently, I think not touching either side of the LCD is very important (for no loss of detail), but I need to get my shots closer to either side.
This shot was in the living room and I am playing with "creative" cropping as there's a distracting red baby seat to the left and a distracting blue pillow to the right. Just know that Bella does have a complete right ear.
I liked this shot because it was clear and bright. Usually I wouldn't have touched the brightness but after checking the histo, I saw I could have bumped it up a little, so I did, and this is the result. I like it!

Yup, it's another kid picture. I actually got out of the house and shot some photos today. Went to our local community college to attend a information session about unemployment benefits and education. 3 hours later (!) I went home and took the kids outside for some biking fun. On the way out of the garage, I saw Haley with her back to the sun and thought it would be a cool place for some flash experimenting.
I put the camera on the tripod, had the flash on top, dialed it in and shot. I wanted the sun to highlight the back of her head (called rim light, I think), which acts to pop her from the background a bit. Don't know how I did, so it's off to a photo website I frequent to get some C&C (comments and criticism).

Riley is reading a little now. I was putting groceries away and he read The Cat in the Hat to me. He read it quite well but I think it was more the familiarity of it than actually reading the words. Then again, I could be wrong. Anyway, big week for him. Riding without training wheels and now reading books. What will next week bring??

Marci got some super cool new shoes today. Pumas! I loved the colors so I grabbed one and put it in my ghetto DIY lightbox, dialed up the speedlite and, blam, took a few pictures.

Another kid picture. I'll try harder tomorrow but today was rainy and a run-errands-with-Mom kind of day. I decided to put the flash on the camera and shoot the kids and their Valentine's Day stuff. As it turns out, the other picture I was going to post was also of Riley, but with a Valentine card in his hand. I just liked how this picture turned out, with him almost popping out of the screen. I didn't directly flash him, but bounced it off a white bookshelf to my right.
Both Hay and Rye have been doing these weird dances to our keyboard's pre-programmed songs. They have been hamming it up for me and I've been trying to get some practice shooting pictures. I should be able to get some non-in-home shots tomorrow.

Ok, one month down. Did some cool things this month and took some cool pictures. I was a little uninspired today and just shot stuff in the front yard. Almost went with an abstract focusy picture of a plant, but decided to wait. Had rehearsal again at the Rainier Brewery and there was a door open to a courtyard. Inside this courtyard were four walls completely covered with graffiti!
Bonus!
Trouble was, the place was lit with oh-so-yellow sodium lamps (think streetlights) and there was sky up above. And it was dark. I busted out the flash to try to use it and succeeded in getting hardly anything useful. I didn't bring a tripod so I couldn't do long exposures. In the end, I wanted to go wide so I stuck on the kit 18-55 and the flash and hoped for the best.
As it turns out, the one I chose was the one I liked best, but maybe not the best picture. Maybe tomorrow I'll bring the tripod as I'm going out one more time.
Goodbye January 2010. Bring on February!

A few days ago, I realized the tabs on our Pilot expired in December. For whatever reason, we never received the renewal notice. I jumped online today and renewed them, so it was off to Crossroads to pick up the new tabs.
After doing that, I saw a little P-Patch to the side of the Sports Authority. Unfortunately, because it's the dead of winter, there was virtually nothing growing. And, sadly, there were few ornaments or interesting things to photograph save for a little figurine and a butterfly.
Lucky you, you get the figurine today. I tried one without flash (pictured) and one with. I bounced the flash off my hand to the figure, but it took on an orangey glow from my skin, so I decided to go with the natural light one.

Ok. Today's picture isn't so inspired. In fact, it was sort of a last minute thing.
I spent some time today helping a friend move out. Took a couple of pictures there, but nothing jumped out. Later on, we went to a friend's house for dinner and as Marci and the kids hung out with their counterparts, Malcolm and I talked photography. We basically got to geek out.
It was great. The food was good too!
Anyway, Malcolm and I talked about custom white balance, depth of field, editing, Project 365, etc, etc. I learned some stuff from him and I think he learned some stuff from me.
Through the night, we chatted about that and had a lot of fun with our families as well. He was also kind enough to give me an off-camera flash he had sitting in a drawer. That's what is in this picture. Now I just have to learn how to use it.
Thanks, Malcolm!
